HYT, the Swiss brand with the most ingenious method of telling time in the industry, has launched a new Skull 48.8 in three colorways, each limited to 50 pieces. The new model, as the name suggests, has a mammoth 48.8 case and has the familiar skull motif seen in previous HYT models.

The watch has a 48.8 mm titanium case

The watch uses a 48.8-mm case made from lightweight titanium with satin and sand-blasted finishes. The brand uses integrates a patented fluidic module with a mechanical movement to tell time. A colored liquid documents the recent past; a transparent fluid indicates the foreseeable future. Their meeting point is a meniscus that indicates the current time.

Fitting this complex movement in to a more wearable case is nigh impossible, so that explains the 17.9 mm thick case. The case has a titanium bezel and a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the dial side and a screw-on exhibition caseback. The case has a black rubber sheathed screw-in titanium crown and is water resistant to 100 meters.

Time is indicated via an ingenious capillary tube

The opaline dial is dominated by a varnished skull (red, blue or green). A skull-shaped capillary runs along the edges of the skull and contains the two fluids – one transparent and the other matches the color scheme of the watch, the three limited editions incorporate red, green and blue fluid respectively. Rotating discs placed in the broad eyes of the skull indicate the power reserve (on the right eye) and the elapsed seconds on the left.

Light and color play accomplished supporting roles in the drama of the Skull 48.8. As each shade flows around the skull to represent elapsed life, it extends its contrasting influence over the monochromatic backcloth of the galvanized dial and titanium case.

The green forms a great contrast on the dial

The watch is powered by a HYT exclusive caliber that beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and has a power reserve of 65 hours. The movement has hand-beveled bridges and features Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges. The rhodium-plated bellows are visible on the dial side too, just under the teeth of the skull. The watch is paired with a grey fabric straps and each of the color scheme is limited to just 50 pieces and is priced at $65,000 each.
