While most of Chopard’s pre-Baselworld buzz was focused around the new updated L.U.C Lunar One perpetual calendar, it saved the rakish L.U.C XP for those that visited the brand booth at the fair last week. The XP and XPS line make up the flagship L.U.C line’s dressier, ultra-thin offerings but this new XP has an air of casual elegance and understated style about it.

The attention to detail is real.

The watch uses a modern 40 mm size stainless steel case. You can see the XP line’s characteristic vertical satin-brushed finish on the caseband here. The brushed flanks serve to accentuate the polished slim bezel of the watch. This being the ultra-thin line, the watch tips the scales at a mere 7.2 mm and is fitted with an anti-glare sapphire crystal.

The silver dial has a vertical satin-brushed finished with large blued numerals that are polished and curved. The numerals appear at 12, 3, 6 and 9 while triangular applied steel indices are used to mark the rest of the hours. Blued steel Dauphine fusée-type hands, characteristic of the XP line, are used to indicate time.

The brushed flanks accentuates the polished bezel.

The watch has one of the coolest straps we’ve saw at Baselworld. It is fitted with a blue cashmere woven strap lined with brown alligator leather and comes with a stainless steel buckle. The L.U.C XP is also available with a blue alligator leather strap, but the cashmere strap brings a lot of character to this timepiece.

This L.U.C XP is powered by a new ultra-thin self-winding movement – Calibre 96.53-L - developed and produced in the Chopard Manufacture workshops in Fleurier. This movement features Chopard’s patented two stacked barrel configuration that allows for a 58-hour power reserve.

The new Caliber 96.53L uses a tungsten rotor.

The use of a micro-rotor (in this case, made of tungsten) provides a good glimpse of the high quality finishing of the movement which despite the 58-hour power reserve and the twin-barrel arrangement is only 3.30 mm thick. Expect to see flourishes like beveled edges on bridges and Geneva Stripes decoration. The use of black engravings gives the movement a more modern look.

In conclusion, the new Chopard LUC XP is a stylish and slim watch that has refined good looks and haute horology chops in equal measure. The watch will retail at $8,737 (approx. AED32,000).
