Doxa has quietly launched a special edition SUB 300 model that pays homage to a rare vintage prototype in collaboration with legendary dive gear manufacturer Aqua Lung. The SUB 300 ‘Black Lung’ is a limited edition of 300 pieces and continues the 50th anniversary celebration for the cult dive watch maker.
Known for their characteristic bright orange dials, Doxa’s pioneering SUB would first plumb the ocean depths in 1967 as a dive watch purpose-built for the emerging recreational scuba diving market. Lauded for its professional-grade quality and legible dials, Doxa earlier this year unveiled a flurry of limited edition models that paid tribute the pioneering SUB models.
Their reputation as a tool watch in the 1960’s brought them the attention of famed diving equipment manufacturer US Divers, who ended up distributing the watch. It is worth noting here that in 1998, US Divers and Aqua Lung consolidated brands under the Aqua Lung name.
This limited edition watch is inspired by a prototype first produced in 1967, a prototype SUB produced in extremely limited numbers, nicknamed ‘Black Lung’ by collectors for its yellow-on-black US Divers logo, and featuring the “aqua-lung” wordmark at 8:00.
Like the original SUB 300, the case of the special edition is machined from a solid block of stainless steel, measuring 42.5 mm in diameter, and 13.4 mm thick. It is fitted with domed bubble sapphire crystal and the brand’s signature steel “beads of rice” bracelet which tapers to an integrated wetsuit extension. It is powered by a chronometer-grade ETA 2824-2 automatic caliber.
Apart from this being the 50th anniversary of the original prototype, 2017 also happens to be Aqua Lung’s 75th anniversary. So both brands, understandably, have enough to be proud about on this re-edition.
A limited edition of 300 pieces, the watch is available for pre-order now on Doxa’s website. It is priced at $2,190.
