Tudor emerged as one of the most talked about watches at the Only Watch Charity Auction in 2015 when the Black Bay One sold for a whopping $375,000 – selling at more than 120 times the pre-sale estimate.
If you thought this was ‘Peak Black Bay’, the Rolex offshoot had more surprises for aficionados in 2016. At Baselworld it launched the Black Bay Bronze – an upsized diver with a beautiful bronze case and a COSC-certified in-house movement. It became one of the fair’s hottest releases and went on to the win the ‘Petite Aiguille’ at the Grand Prix D’ Horlogerie D’Genève (GPHG). And then just before summer this year Tudor broke the internet again with the Black Bay Bronze Bucherer edition, a blue dial version of the bronze diver that was part of the Swiss luxury retailer’s 130th anniversary celebrations.
Which brings us to Tudor’s contribution to the Only Watch Charity this year – the Black Bay Bronze One which sees the flagship model being offered with a winding crown one the left and a khaki green dial. Worn on the right wrist, its ergonomic design is ideal for left-handed people. It may be recalled that Tudor launched the LHD Pelagos last year which had the winding crown on the left as well.
The characteristic element of the Heritage Black Bay Bronze is its imposing bronze case. With a case width of 43 mm, the watch has great presence on the wrist. The choice of case material is an aesthetic reference to the use of bronze in historic ships and other diving equipment. Tudor’s case material is an aluminum bronze alloy that is expected to develop of a unique and homogeneous patina to match its user's habits.
The watch is powered by MT5601-LHD, a manufacture calibre with official chronometer certification and the buyer of this watch at the auction will also have a chance to visit the manufacture in Geneva. It is paired with a khaki-green and beige fabric strap with bronze buckle and additional aged brown leather strap with bronze buckle included in the box. The Black Bay Bronze One has a pre-sale estimate of $4,600-$5,700.
