Remember the Urwerk limited edition UR-100 Gold Edition that we wrote about last week? Yes, the Star Wars-inspired gold version of the radical UR-100 timepiece from last year? The first watch in the 25-run limited edition was auctioned off for charity on May 8 for a whopping CHF96,500 (that’s about $99,590). Out of this amount, CHF40,000 ($41,500) will go to fund research to help in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic that’s sweeping the world today.

The watch is carved out of a solid block of 2N Yellow Gold

Though the watch was a numbered limited edition of 25 pieces, the first watch in the series would not carry a limited edition number plaque on the case, but just the engraving "Fight C-19". An Iranian national based in Liverpool, England ended up with the winning bid. It was also going to be up to the winning bidder to decide the charity they wanted Urwerk to donate the funds to. That charity is the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) association.

The special engraved plaque of the auction watch

“As the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in tropical medicine, LSTM plays a key role in fight against COVID-19. It is also a symbol of the city's past where Liverpool was a prominent port city which carried on an extensive trade with overseas regions,” said the buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous.

The latest UR-100’s octagonal case is carved out of a solid block on 2N yellow gold. The surfaces are satin-finished and a domed sapphire crystal dome reminiscent of the shape of early Urwerk models tops the yellow gold case. Urwerk’s PR spiel suggests that yellow gold color scheme of the watch is inspired by the Star Wars droid C3PO. The case is 41 mm wide; 49.7 mm long and 14 mm thick and is water-resistant up to 30 meters.

The watch has astronomical complications too

In addition to Urwerk’s recognizable orbital hour satellite display, the watch has two astronomical complications hitherto never seen in a timepiece. You can read more about the watch here. Urwerk has also announced that it will donate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to the most vulnerable people living in Switzerland via a donation to the Swiss Red Cross. The original retail price of the Urwerk UR-100 Gold numbered edition is CHF58,000.
