IWC has been busy this year. After it launched the revamped Da Vinci line during SIHH this year, it was in the news recently for the launch of the new Ingenieur and more recently, the Portugieser Chronograph Classic. The Schaffhausen brand has now launched two new Pilot’s watches to honor the French pilot and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

The Antoine de Saint Exupéry edition Ref. IW377713

IWC is a partner of the Fondation Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which helps children and young people in disadvantaged circumstances. Founded in 2008 by Saint-Exupéry’s descendants, the charitable institution works to preserve the humanist values of the French writer and pilot.

Based on the models it showcased at SIHH 2016 – the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII and the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph – the big distinguishing detail on these watches is the presence of a tobacco brown dial and a brown calfskin strap with decorative white stitching. At the same time, IWC is also unveiling a new model of the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 with a brown dial.

Mark XVIII Edition Antoine de Saint Exupéry Ref. IW327003

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry” (Ref. IW377713) is encased in a 43-mm matte-brushed stainless steel case. It is powered by self-winding IWC Caliber 79320 based on the workhorse ETA 7750 with a power reserve of 44 hours. The numerals and hands on the clearly structured dial feature luminous coatings to ensure good legibility, even at night-time.

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry” (Ref. IW327003) uses a 40 mm brushed steel case and is powered by IWC Caliber 3511 (based on the Sellita SW300-1) and has a power reserve of 42 hours. Both watches feature an engraving of a Lightning P-38 aircraft on the caseback. Saint-Exupéry was flying this aircraft on a reconnaissance flight before he disappeared.

Both watches feature the characteristic tobacco brown sunburst dial and are fitted with a brown calfskin strap by Santoni with decorative white stitching. This design is inspired by the typical overalls worn by pilots in Saint-Exupéry’s era.

The 36 mm version with the tobacco brown dial

In addition to these two models, a third model in the same colors has been introduced – the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36, aimed at those with slender wrists. The 36 mm version (Ref. IW324001) was first introduced during SIHH 2016 and the new Reference IW324009 joins the collection with a brown dial and brown alligator leather strap.

IWC’s pilot’s watches feature a soft-iron inner case that protects the movement against the influence of magnetic fields, and the sapphire glass is specially designed to be protected against sudden drops in pressure in the cockpit. The new models are available now in IWC boutiques and from authorized IWC retailers.
