At just 55 gm weight, Omega has unveiled a new Seamaster Aqua Terra “Ultra Light” model that will appeal to athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. As the name suggests, this sports watch is extremely lightweight and was designed in collaboration with brand ambassador and ace golfer Rory Mcllroy.

Taking a leaf out of the Richard Mille playbook — the niche sports brand famously makes watches for athletes including Rafael Nadal’s RM 027 Tourbillon back in 2010 that weighed just 20 gm — this is a watch meant to withstand the rigors of professional sport like, er, golf. The case is made from an alloy called Gamma Titanium, a first for Omega, and measures 41 mm in width.

According to Omega, this alloy has been borrowed from the aeronautical industry and is known for its increased resistance and lightness as compared to conventional titanium. In another first for the Aqua Terra, the case features a push-in telescopic crown that can be stowed inside the case when not in use. This ergonomic feature should translate to more comfort for the user.

The signature striped dial of the watch is also made from grade 5 titanium. Presented in a field matte grey, the dial follows the same style as the other Aqua Terra models with applied blackened indices filled with SuperLuminova and blackened lume-filled hands. The Omega logo, seconds hand and hour indices are made from aluminium to reduce the overall weight of the product.

The Apple Watch’s influence on strap design is clearly evident in the fabric strap of the watch which is very similar to the style of the extremely comfortably “sports loop” option seen on the smartwatch. Each watch is also presented with a rubber strap.

The “Ultra Light” deploys the brand’s first-ever titanium movement. All the bridges and the main plate are in ceramized titanium, which means there's less friction between the components and it gives the movement this dark grey colour. Calibre 8928 Titanium is a manual-winding calibre with Co-Axial escapement. As a METAS-certified Master Chronometer, Calibre 8928 Titanium is resistant to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss and has a power reserve of 72 hours.
The watch is presented with a 5-year warranty and is available in three color accents – red, blue, and green. It will retail at a price of €45,300 and will be available in December this year.
