The release of the much-awaited Tom Cruise-starrer Top Gun: Maverick has been pushed to next summer but IWC Schaffhausen has added a new chronograph to its Top Gun range of Pilot’s Watches. Named for the famed United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor (SFTI) program, the new watch is the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition “SFTI” and is inspired by a 2018 timepiece made exclusively for the Top Gun graduates.
It may be recalled that two years ago as part of its partnership with Top Gun, IWC issued a black ceramic Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor” with the Top Gun patch on the dial and available only to graduates.
The civilian edition chronograph unveiled today has a real tactical look and feel thanks to the use of matte surfaces and dark tones. It comes in a 44 mm black ceramic case; the caseback and chronograph pushers are made from Ceratanium, a proprietary alloy combining the best qualities of titanium and ceramic. The watch was purpose-built to be a durable cockpit instrument and should withstand the extreme strain of life in a supersonic jet like the F/A-18 Super Hornet.
The tactical look is completed by a black dial and black hands coated with luminescence. Only the red small seconds hand and the counterweight of the chronograph seconds hand, which is the shape of a fighter jet, bring a pop of color to this very instrument-like dial.
The watch is powered by the self-winding, chronograph movement Caliber 69380, which was first introduced in the Pilots’ Watch Chronograph Spitfire last year. Manufactured in-house, it has a classical column-wheel design and displays elapsed hours and minutes on subdials at 9 and 12 o’clock, the day and date at 3 o’clock. Its double-sided pawl winding system, an IWC technical hallmark, enables the movement to amass a power reserve of 46 hours.
The watch is fitted with a khaki green textile strap and is limited to 1,500 pieces only and is priced at AED36,000.
