As we move into winter in the Arabian Gulf, it is time to reclaim the outdoors again. The balmy November mornings herald the start of the surfing season and “head high” days happen fairly often in the winter months. This year, we got our friends at Surf House to “test drive” four hot watches from Seiko’s new Prospex diver’s watch range.
Seiko celebrated the 55th anniversary of its first diver’s watch with the re-introduction of two new models that riff on popular timepieces from their archives. The first is a Prospex diver that reinterprets the Ref. 6105-8110/9 ‘Willard’ from 1970 and the second is a fresh reissue of Seiko’s first diver’s watch, the 62MAS from 1965. Here are the four watches seen in the video.
Prospex Ref. SPB149J1
A modern reinterpretation of the Ref. 6217-8000 ‘62MAS’ – Seiko’s first diver’s watch from 1965 – the SPB149J1 has a blue-gray sunburst dial and is cased in a 40.5 mm steel case with the brand’s proprietary Diashield coating to better protect it against the elements and scratches. The watch is paired with a stainless steel three-link bracelet. This is a limited edition of 5,500 pieces.

Prospex Ref. SPB147J1
This version of the ‘62MAS’ reissue has a chocolate brown dial and gilt accents on the dial. Inspired by vintage watches of the 1960’s – there is no crown guard – and the watch is paired with a silicone rubber strap. You can read our hands-on review of the watch here.
Both versions are powered by the upgraded Caliber 6R35. A self-winding movement that can also be manually wound, Caliber 6R35 has a power reserve of at least 70 hours and Seiko promises an accuracy of “+25 to -15 seconds per day” under normal conditions.

Prospex Ref. SPB153J1
This watch is an update on a much-loved vintage Seiko diver, the Ref. 6105-8110/9. The original was nicknamed the “Captain Willard” after it was worn by Martin Sheen’s character in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 epic Apocalypse Now.
The SPB153J1 has a khaki green dial and bezel, unlike the original “Willard” and the case is depth-rated to 200 meters. You can watch a video review of the watch here.

The black dial version of the “Willard” remake is closer to the color scheme of the original. This model is paired with a stainless steel three-link bracelet.
Both versions are powered by Caliber 6R35 just as in the three watches mentioned earlier. You can read our hands-on review of the watch here.
