TAG Heuer has launched its second generation smartwatch; the new Connected Modular 45 features a smartwatch module that can be interchangeable with a mechanical one. It also allows users to interchange parts like strap, lugs, buckle and straps.
The finally assembly of this watch is now done in the brand’s manufacture in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, so the Connected Modular 45 is now officially Swiss Made. Developed in partnership with Intel and powered by Google’s new Android Wear 2.0, this new smartwatch is now water-resistant to 50 meters, has an in-built GPS sensor, an NFC sensor for payments, a high definition AMOLED screen.
Its design is a clear nod to the new generation mechanical Carrera models. The case is 45 mm in diameter (a millimeter smaller than the first generation) with interchangeable lugs, strap, buckle and central module. The watch is available in grade 5 titanium, or plated with 18K 5N rose gold, or in black ceramic, with or without diamonds.
There is a plethora of choice as far as customization goes. For the choice of strap alone, there are no fewer than 18 references available, made from rubber, natural leather or anthracite grey leather, titanium or ceramic. Customers have the option of swapping the electronic module with two mechanical options at the moment - a time-only Calibre 5, or the Tourbillon Heuer 02-T chronograph.
The modularity concept extends to the watch's software, with dial customization. The brand has developed 30 watch dials, some of which are inspired by historical pieces such as the famous panda dial. In addition, the TAG Heuer Studio dial configurator offers customers the chance to create their own dial right down to the details in the SuperLuminova.
The watch can be synced with a mobile phone operating on Android 4.3+ or iOS 9+. It is recharged using a contact charger. The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 is on sale from $1,650. A Deluxe box set including a connected watch (in grade 5 titanium, with titanium lugs and brown natural leather strap), complete with the COSC-certified chronograph Heuer-02T tourbillon mechanical module, plus an additional black rubber strap is available for $17,000.
