Of late, Panerai has been trying out different materials and their combinations in its watches. The latest such is the Submersible Goldtech Orocarbo 44mm PAM01070. This diver deftly combines the brand’s proprietary Goldtech and Carbotech materials in the case and bezel respectively.

Goldtech lends a rich, deep hue to the 44mm case thanks to the alloy’s copper and platinum content. The use of Carbotech helps the bezel, crown and crown bridge lever stand out in strong contrast against the case. Carbotech is a composite created by compressing and fusing layers of carbon fibre sheets.

The dial, with its applied indices and ‘satiné soleil’ decoration, adds to the overall look of restrained elegance. Behind the case back, in titanium with black DLC coating, is the P.900 automatic movement with a power reserve of three days.

The black rubber strap gets a trapezoidal pin buckle made of titanium and coated with black DLC. With a unidirectional rotating bezel, screwed case back, 300m water resistance and luminescent indices and hands, this is still very much a tool watch. But Panerai has succeeded in infusing significant doses of luxury and sophistication into this new Submersible.
