Nomos Glashütte has unveiled a new sports watch created in association with German furniture designer Werner Aisslinger. The new watch – called Autobahn – is inspired by vintage motoring but retains the chic minimalism that the brand is known for.
For a motorsport inspired watch, the Autobahn has a rather subtle form. In a sense, it is a refreshing change from the kind of clichéd hyper-masculine motorsport-inspired chronographs we’ve come to see in recent years. The aim, according to Aisslinger, was nothing less than “a new archetype for a watch”. It uses a 41 mm stainless steel case with a slim bezel and slim, straight lugs. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters and is fitted with a curved sapphire crystal and an exhibition caseback.
The dial comes in three color versions: white silver-plated, sports gray, and midnight blue. The curve of the dial’s flange, inspired by legendary race tracks, is particularly striking. The subdial is curved too while the elongated date window between five and seven o’clock is three lanes — or numerals—wide. Superluminova markings flank the hour typography, which not only makes the watch legible at night, but is also reminiscent of the speedometer of classic cars.
Aisslinger runs the studio assilinger, located in Berlin and Singapore, along with Tina Bunyaprasit. Aisslinger and his team gained their reputation with work for the furniture producer Vitra, futuristic hotels, the mobile living solution loftcube, with greenhouse-inspired kitchens and renewable chairs—and a design approach that is both pioneering and sustainable. Aisslinger’s blueprints can be found in numerous museums: the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York, Fonds national d’art contemporain in Paris, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, to name a few.
It is powered by the in-house Caliber DUW 6101 - a new movement based on the Neomatik automatic movement - and created specifically for this watch. The watch is paired with a black fabric strap, is priced at $4,800 and should be available in stores by March 22.
