It’s one thing for brands to champion lifestyle or identity, but another for them to actually deliver these unique experiences to their customers. This year at SIHH 2019, Panerai had more to offer than just timepieces.
Three of their special editions offer buyers three unique experiences as well – from diving off the coast of French Polynesia with free-diving champion Guillaume Néry, training with the Italian naval commandos in La Spezia, to exploring the Arctic with Swiss explorer and conservationist Mike Horn.
Panerai isn’t the first brand to offer their customers experiences based on their brand promise on the purchase of a timepiece. Roger Dubuis has done this in the past with their Pirelli and Lamborghini collaborations. Incidentally, Panerai’s CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué, was previously at Roger Dubuis.
Let’s take a closer look at the three special editions.
Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Néry Edition
Néry is a French free diving champion with four constant weight free-diving world records. The PAM00982 Guillaume Néry Edition is a diving watch with a flyback chronograph depth-rated to about 300 metres. The 47-mm-wide titanium case has a black DLC coating and is fitted with a unidirectional rotating bezel with a black ceramic insert. It features a closed caseback with an engraving of Néry’s signature, an outline of the French Polynesian island of Moorea and a silhouette which recalls his free-diving record: a depth of 126 metres.
The textured dial goes from an aquamarine blue in the center to black as it approaches the bezel. Legibility is not an issue thanks to the luminous white markers, which stand out on the grey dial. P.9100 Caliber, a self-winding manufacture movement with a power reserve of three days, is the beating heart of this watch.
Paired with a personalized black rubber strap and trapezoidal titanium buckle, this watch is a limited edition of 15 pieces and the owners get invited to Moorea, where Guillaume Néry lives, for a really immersive experience (pardon the pun). They get to go whale watching and diving with the champion. All this for €38,900.
Panerai Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech 47 mm Special Edition
This one is a limited edition of 33 pieces and features a black Carbotech (a composite material based on carbon fiber) case with a unidirectional rotating bezel, also made of the same material. The watch is depth-rated to about 300 meters and features a closed caseback with an engraving of the insignia of COMSUBIN, the Diving and Commando Group of the Italian Navy.
The black camouflage pattern dial is made from carbon and features luminous dots and indexes in khaki green, skeletonized hands, a date window at 3 o’clock and a small seconds dial at 9. The self-winding manufacture movement, P.9010 caliber, powers this Ref. PAM00961 and has a power reserve of 72 hours thanks to the presence of two barrels. The watch is again paired with a personalized khaki green rubber strap and trapezoidal titanium buckle.
The 33 customers can participate in a training session with the elite COMSUBIN unit at their base in La Spezia in Liguria. Incidentally, the number 33 also represents the number of gold medals for valor won by Comsubin members throughout its history. This limited edition is priced at €39,900.
Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition 47mm
Mike Horn is a well-known Johannesburg-born Swiss explorer and has been a Panerai Ambassador for more than 15 years now. The Italian brand has been part of Horn’s last four expeditions including Arktos, a solo expedition in the Arctic Circle. Horn is also a well-known conservationist.
Fittingly, the 47-mm-wide case of the Mike Horn Edition is made from EcoTitanium – recycled aviation-grade titanium – and is depth-rated to 300 meters. The unidirectional rotating bezel too is made from the same material. The watch is also fitted with a blue strap made from recycled PET bottles. The black sandwich dial features blue SuperLuminova markings for clear legibility. The Panerai signature is silkscreened on to the sapphire crystal. A date window is placed at 3 o’ clock and a small seconds hand is placed at 9. This watch is also powered by the abovementioned P.9010 caliber.
Limited to just 19 pieces, buyers of this watch will have the opportunity to join Horn in Svalbard, an archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. There among the ice floes of the Arctic, these lucky 19 have a chance to put themselves to the test and to confront nature and its challenges. It also offers them a chance to see up close the dangers faced by our ecosystem.
